Dealing with Divorce – Households with Children

by Benjamin West

Children complicate divorce, which can often be a stressful experience for both people involved. Even when parents in the midst of a separation make their best efforts to keep the children uninvolved, it is nearly impossible for the children to be unaffected.

Parents are often under the impression that any turmoil or conflict between them will go unnoticed by children as long as these matters are conducted behind closed doors. It is seldom true. Regardless of age, kids are much more observant than we think, especially regarding the two people they know best. Parents should be aware of many factors to ensure a smooth separation.

To a child, their parents are often considered infallible. This is why kids tend to blame themselves when things go awry in their homes. They’ll pick up on the tension between parents, even before a divorce is imminent, and look for a cause. A child will find it difficult to understand the complexities involved when two people choose to terminate a marriage, and, as a result, will often scrutinize their own behavior as a possible cause.

A child might believe that problems at home are being caused by his/her bad behaviour at school or disappointing exam results Regardless of their true behavior, many children will blame themselves when dealing with a family splitting apart. This leads to a very dangerous cycle which can make the situation much worse.

When one parents makes the decision to move out of the household, this leads to a feeling of “choosing teams.”A mother or father will often be tempted to alter their regular methods of parenting in an attempt to win favor from the children. Sometimes nasty comments slip out and parents often become more lax with their kids in an attempt to get them on their side. This cycle will only lead to more future problems.

The most significatn thing for parents to remember is to be consistent trough the whole process of divorce. Treating a child differently in an already stressful time can alter the behavior of the child. You can’t remove the feelings of fear and confusion in a mind of a child, and the child’s parents can even make things worse if they show inconsistent ways of behaving.

The best thing a parent can do during challenging times like these is to talk freely with their kids. Honesty is the best policy; they will sense it if you try to cover up the truth. Don’t let this change the way you act towards your offspring.
