How To Install Roller Shades Properly
There are a couple of things that one needs to know when it comes to installing roller shades, which can make for an excellent window shades option and light blocker. Usually, these versatile shapes are divided into three specific types, a suntier, a laminated roller and a suntone. The suntone is the cheapest of the three and is predominantly made of vinyl. The suntier is a good midrange model and the laminated roller is a high-end shade that is usually custom-made and made of vinyl and cotton fabric joined together through lamination.
Regardless, installing any one of the three is pretty much the same. There are a few tools that are needed, but all are readily available from any hardware store or home improvement store. Assemble them before beginning the project. The first tool needed is a tape measure. Along with a tape measure, grab a pencil and a flat head and Philips head screwdriver, carpenter’s level and a quarter inch hex head.
Once all of the tools are collected it’ll be time to get an idea of the hardware (which is usually supplied with the shade) and how it will be installed. Check to see that all parts are gathered together. Generally, common parts for a roller shade include brackets, a clutch mechanism for each roller, cord loop of some sort and fabric. Not every shade will require every part listed.
Remember, if the window shades are going into a metal frame it will be necessary to substitute wood screws for sheet metal screws and make sure to use a drill to make all holes. If the frame that the shade brackets will be sunk into is stone or concrete or some other sort of masonry, obtain the appropriate carbide drill bit and an anchor kit that will be placed into each drilled hole.
The first thing you’ll need to do is determine if you are going to mount a shade inside the frame (called the inside mount method) or outside (outside mount method). When mounting inside the frame, make sure that the roller shade does not come into contact with the top of the window frame. Make sure you position the mounting brackets inside the frame and use your level to make sure they are evenly mounted.
When doing mounting on the outside of the frame make sure that the shade will not make contact when raised or lowered with the top of the frame. Again, make sure that the mounting brackets are properly installed and aligned and are at a level height across from one another. If done properly, the shade will move freely. Make sure to allow an eighth of an inch between the brackets so that the roller can rotate freely.
Once accomplished, it is only a matter of placing the shade into the brackets properly. Follow the mounting instructions that come with the shade very closely and make sure not to place too much tension onto the roller or there is likelihood that it will become damaged.
