In What Instances is This Alternative Flooring Appropriate? Self-Avowed Cork Flooring Geniuses Lock-Horns as the Battle Ensues! (Part I)

Yes, it is true that cork flooring is gaining, with great rapidity, recognition as a leader in alternative types of flooring. The fact that it is both environmentally-friendly and considered to be both a renewable and sustainable natural resource due to the short-interval required for regeneration, make it extremely attractive.

However, when it comes to cork flooring, one must proceed with caution. Hence, the battle to which your attention will now be drawn.

The ill-informed avid cork flooring enthusiasts, enamored by numerous inherent aspects, consider it the only choice. Yes, it may be installed over existing flooring, it is glue-less, and requires either no or virtually no tools for installation. (If glue is required for installation, the carpenter will find that virtually any glue will serve the purpose.)

These enthusiasts are short-sighted, allowing that enthusiasm to overlook some obvious limitations when installing cork flooring.

As Mark Twain said of a politico, “It ain’t what he don’t know that concerns me. It’s what he knows that ain’t so!” Such is the case with the “cork flooring in every instance” crowd.

Yes, it may be easily installed. Furthermore, if subflooring is in disrepair (e.g., cracked, old, grimy, or just dirty) cork flooring may be an appropriate selection.

Additionally, it may be installed, in many cases, over surfaces with little or no subfloor preparation. It also reduces the mess that often accompanies installation of other types of flooring.

However, those truly in the know (e.g., the author) do not recommend the installation of this flooring in either basements or areas prone to a great deal of moisture. (It is readily acknowledged that a moisture-barrier is also recommended when installing cork flooring if moisture is likely to migrate from the slab flooring.)

It is essential that you check the moisture content in more than one season if you intend to place it over a slab prior to installing this product!
