Kitchens Ought To Be Efficient As Well As Beautiful

Anyone who has tried to cook in a poorly designed or messy kitchen knows how frustrating it can be. Following are some suggestions for organizing kitchens and keeping them at their most efficient.

Work should flow in a smooth manner, not a choppy one punctuated by having to move from one side of the room to the other. To make a cake you should be able to take the items needed from the refrigerator and move instantly to where the flour and sugar is stored. Having to cross the room several times to assemble all ingredients is slower and more time consuming.

Whether you are building a home or unpacking a kitchen after a move, think about how you cook before filling your cabinets. For example, if you like to season as you cook, placing seasonings on a spice rack across the room is inefficient. They need to be in a cabinet near the cook top instead.

Store the dishes you use the most often in the most accessible cabinets. If you only use your china yearly or have a large stock pot which almost never sees use, relegate these items to the pantry. If you have no pantry, put them in cabinets with the worst access, such as in corners or on the bottom.

Keep counters clear of clutter. Put things up when you are finished with them. Even one or two items a day that are not returned to their places can result in a messy counter with no work space. Appliances that are not often used, such as juicers, food processors, or blenders should be cleaned and stored in a cabinet or pantry.

Put away clean dishes as soon as the dishwasher is finished. Load the dirty dishes as soon as they are soiled to avoid stacks in your sink. As you cook, rinse spoons and bowls and place in the dishwasher to save time on clean up. If possible, teach other family members to add their dirty dishes to the dishwasher instead of placing them in the sink or on a counter top for you to handle.

The kitchen is the center of a lot of activity in any home, but do not allow things to migrate to your counter tops that do not belong there. Games, bills, and homework papers should each have a designated spot. That spot should not be the top of the counter you need to mix up a cake or chop onions for a meat loaf.

People sometimes forget about decorating their kitchens, putting all of their efforts into living rooms and other areas. You may not have a lot of free wall space in your kitchen, but that does not mean you cannot make it more attractive. If you have a plant ledge above the cabinets, you can use it to display decorative plates or mugs. Small figurines can find a place on window sills. Toaster covers, dish towels, and pot holders can all add a nice touch when left visible.
