Knowing About Sod Webworms

by Neoma Archer

Did you hear them coming? Did you even sense that they were going to come visit? Did you even know that they would come to like what you have and decide to stay with you indefinitely? Now that is the kind of visitor that you do not want knocking on your door. But what would definitely not be good is the kind that you did not even invite and the kind that does more harm than good.

Now take a look at your lawn. That lawn may seem to be just still and green but it has a lot of stories. And it definitely has had a lot of experiences with unwanted visitors. Many insects are attracted to lawns that are healthy and clean. And when they find that one lawn, they stick to it and they stay there. They make it their own. Sure you cannot talk to them and they cannot talk back so they cannot tell you that they have chosen your lawn. The sign that you know that they are there is when your lawn starts to look unhealthy and messy because these insects have been doing too much there that the plants do not like it. You want them to go. Now.

Are those really sod webworms? How do you know that you are actually looking at them already? Those sod webworms may look to be harmless but they can do a good amount of damage to your garden or your lawn. There are insects that are an advantage to these pieces of land but there are some like the one mentioned previously that can do a lot of chaos. You do not want them there really.

A sod webworm is indeed a worm. Its length goes to just about three quarters of an inch. It has a definitive mark on its abdomen area which are four rows of brown spots. This insect can have a body colored green, gray, beige, or brown. When you see such in your lawn or garden, start thinking about you would be able to take them out.

These insects usually are at their peak around the late portion of June right into September. So if you do notice some browning of your grass during such period and then you see such worms crawling about, then you know who the culprit is and you will know just what they could do to your lawn if you do not do anything about it. See, they actually work their way into the grass that the grass becomes unhealthy and then starts to go brown. When you pull it up, it would be easy for you to do so. Just treat the areas with insecticide and you are going to be all set.
