Portrait Photography – Tips And Methods
People have been the theme of various popular photographs from time to time. Portrait photography deals with portraying a person or a group with all their individual characteristics.
A good portrait photograph achieves a non-conventional look by capturing the subject from a unique camera angle and in a mood that is representative of the subject. However, photographs of one person or of whole families are also taken by photographers, and these are normally preserved in family albums.
A ideal close up with a sharp focus on the subject’s face is what gives portrait photographs that discernible mark of elegance. This is achieved by an old camera trick of making the background a little bit obscure and indistinct so that the subject’s face gets the maximum focus. This job of focussing the face becomes simpler with a camera having a larger aperture. One the other hand, it is advisable to shoot with a normal aperture if focus on the background is as important as on the person, which is usually true in outdoor photography.
Without ample light available to shoot, photographers find it difficult to click a good picture. However, some essential photography guidelines if sincerely followed can yield that perfect portrait photograph. If the person is made to sit by a window in a position in which the sun’s rays fall only partially on the face, then the photograph normally ends up looking splendid. The other side of the face can be lighted up by using a reflective object like a white piece of sheet or board. However, Studio lighting can also be tuned to fit the light needs for high quality portrait photographs, and thus several photographers prefer to click such photographs within the confines of studios.
Another important thing that you must remember is that the more at ease a subject is during the shoot, better the chances are of getting an ideal portrait photograph. Technical sophistication in photography will yield results only when the person being photographed is comfortable and at ease, and projects his or her true self before the camera.
