The container needs to be held firmly. the fingers and the thumb can be used to open the cap. Put the thumb or trigger finger on the activation button to release the spray. Continue practicing until you can smoothly open the pepper spray container and spray.
Once you make a spray, always take a step to the side and back. You do not want to get the pepper in your own eyes. This will also move you out of the way of your attacker.
