The Controversy Over Trampoline Safety Nets
You would feel more at ease having trampoline safety nets. The term itself gives the impression of genuine security. You should know though that not everyone agrees that using nets is a good idea. Before you buy one, you need to be aware of the issues surrounding it.
What They Do
Nets are placed around trampolines. Once put up, they create the image of a play pen enclosure. These nets are intended to prevent accidental falls by users. They are therefore especially useful when you have very young or small jumpers. Because they enclose a jumping mat, they also serve as a reminder to users where the center of a mat should be.
Nets can be used together with safety pads. These pads go around the frame and springs of a trampoline. They prevent injuries from accidentally hitting the frame or getting toes and fingers pinched by the springs. Nets can go around the safety pads. Many safety experts suggest though that nets should go around the inner portion of the frame and pads.
Trampoline safety nets can come in different sizes. Some manufacturers claim that they have nets that will fit every standard trampoline design and size. As an extra precaution though, you should measure your trampoline and refer back to the net manufacturer to make sure you have a perfect fit. Check if a company has a good return policy in case your net does not fit.
Why Some Object
Some people are having second thoughts about safety nets though. Critics claim though that they can also create a false sense of security among parents. Indeed, having a reliable net to catch stray jumpers may make some parents less watchful. Experts stress though that accidents other than falls can still happen because of unsupervised trampoline use.
When they know they are not being watched over, some kids have the tendency to try out new things on the trampoline. They can for example get on the trampoline in groups. This can lead to them bumping against each other on air or as they land. Individual users can also additionally engage in advanced jumps or flips that may be dangerous just because they think that a net can keep them safe. Experts note that injuries from trampoline use are usually attributed to causes that are not due to falling from trampolines.
In other words, nets can make parents and kids complacent. This should not be the case though. Nets can and do offer protection but no one should trust everything to a safety net. Parents should continue to monitor trampoline use. Young kids should also be periodically reminded of what is safe to do on a trampoline. First time jumpers should at least be taught the fundamentals of safe jumping. Toddlers too should not be allowed to jump with bigger kids. They may be better off on mini trampolines with handle bars.
It is not entirely fair to discount the value of trampoline safety nets. There is no doubt that they have been a lot of help to some parents and kids. You should always remember though to continue to be vigilant even when you have them around.
