The Right Home Security Company for You
Home security companies offer many different options and plans for homeowners these days. From simple sensors placed on the windows to complete systems that include video cameras and heat sensors. All of these protections are there to give you piece of mind. When you hire a home security company, you are trusting them with the safety of your home and your family. The choice should not be made lightly.
Start looking for a good home security company right in your neighborhood. Ask your neighbors who they use, if anyone, and check with friends that live nearby. You may be able to include or eliminate options that you may not have considered. Call your local police department and see if they have any suggestions since they sometimes work directly with monitoring companies. Try and find as much information as you can.
A good home security company will be licensed. The license will probably be specific to the state or jurisdiction that they are operating in. Large, national companies should also hold some type of license. You may want to check the Better Business Bureau as well to see if there are any unanswered complaints pending against the security company, or if there is a pattern of complaints being lodged against them.
Make sure you fully understand the services that the security company is providing. There are companies that will simply install alarms to protect your windows and doors from entry. There are other companies that will install alarms and other devices to allow remote monitoring of your home. These companies may also monitor your home for you and take action in the case of any unusual activity. Be very aware of exactly what you are going to buy.
See if you can examine the parts of the security system that would be installed into your home. You may have to use these pieces of equipment, most especially the control panel, in an emergency. You want to be certain that the layout is not overly confusing, that the display is not too small to see, and that the unit itself seems to be intuitive to use. Finally, check if your home meets the electrical requirements to run all of the devices.
Read the contract. Read the contract from top to bottom before signing it. Not doing this is a mistake that some homeowners make. Every part of the service you are going to pay for should be painstakingly spelled out. Leave nothing to chance or verbal agreements, this will protect both yourself and the security company from misunderstandings. If you are signing up for a monitoring service as well, know what the monthly fees are and any other charges that you might incur through normal use of the system.
If after a period of time you are not happy with the performance of the equipment or the security company, let them know. Sometimes they can fix the situation. If they fail to meet your expectations, though, it may be time to consider moving on to another company. This is mainly for home monitoring businesses. You may lose some money changing to another service, but it will be worth it if it makes you feel safer.
