What Remedies Are Available When Bed Bugs Bug You
The bed bug is a tiny parasite that gets its name from the insects habit of making its nests in the bedding ground of warm blooded animals. The bugs sole source of food is the fresh blood of mammals and birds.
Getting rid of bed bugs is a major undertaking, but one you have no choice but to pursue should you be so unfortunate as to acquire the pests. An infestation of these creatures will leave you with minute blemishes that can add up to an infected rash or worse.
There are also proactive steps you can take if you live in an apartment building where other tenants are experiencing bed bug problems.
Adults have no wings, but the nymphs do. The reddish brown fully grown bug is visible as a tenth of an inch long dot. They are hard to spot on multi-colored bedding, but stand out well against white linen. Nymphs, smaller and nearly transparent, require a magnifying glass. The egg hatchery is typically located inside the mattress.
The best way to kill the invading insects is heat. One of the best weapons is a fabric steamer; one of those little hand held ones that you use for getting the wrinkles out of clothes. Use the steamer, or even an electric kettle, to sanitize the bed frame. In the absence of a hand steamer, a wipe of full strength rubbing alcohol will do.
The mattress is the biggest and most important chore. If you are being preventative, wrap the mattress in plastic. But if you are already infested, the mattress may need to be replaced entirely. If you can not afford to replace your box spring and mattress and are determined to save them, steam is best. Fir this chore, the hand steamer will do the trick, but it takes a long time. A carpet steam cleaner is a better choice, even if you have to rent one.
The best type of plastic covering for mattresses and-or box springs are sold by the better mattress stores. They are bag-like affairs and are sometimes promoted for the control of dust mites, but will do fine for your needs. Short of this, plastic sheeting from your local hardware store can be used.
Once the bed frame, box spring and mattress have been dealt with it is time to turn your attention to the bedding. All bottom sheets, top sheets, pillow cases and pillows and whatever bedspreads, blankets, quilts, or duvets you might use need to be sanitized. This can be done rather easily. All it takes is drying the linen and bedding in hot dryer for twenty minutes.
Let us say you have done all the steps and you have done them right. You have steamed your mattress and wrapped it and the box spring in plastic. You have sanitized your linen in a hot dryer for more than the minimum time required. You have cleaned the bed frame with rubbing alcohol or steam.
Now place the feet of the bed frame inside ordinary ten or aluminum cans. Wrap doubled sided carpet around the bottoms of the cans. Bed bugs trying to return to the bed will get stuck in the tape. A few may get across, but they have difficulty climbing smooth surfaces like metal or glass.
