Why Traditional Reproduction Furniture Is Virtually An Obligation
Traditional reproduction furniture really leaves most of the furniture you see in the shops today looking rather shabby and plain. The old furniture designers and furniture crafters knew a thing or two about design, but unfortunately it often seems today as though we have left behind the skill and passion which was used to create stunning pieces of interior furniture such as desks and bookcases.
These days furniture solutions seem to centre more around keeping manufacturing costs low, transportation costs cheap and maximising the convenience factor at every step. Certainly I’ll admit that flatpack furniture has its uses, and in offices or some homes can prove to be affordable, convenient solutions. But then takeout is convenient – yet it doesn’t mean that it’s good to live on it and accept it’s all there is.
I moved house recently – not the most wonderful of experiences, but fortunately on this occasion I had decided that this new home would be my base for a good many years to come. The property was not one of these new flatpack homes which seem to come out of a box and be erected within three days by a couple of labourers in between coffee breaks.
My new home is a beautiful Victorian property, and as is often the case, it has what estate agents call character. In this case, that’s not a bad thing – there are several period features such as the mantelpieces, tall windows, high ceilings and some fabulous parquet flooring. But clearly the threshold of such properties should never be crossed by anyone holding a cardboard box containing the sort of furniture that’s held together by a plastic bag full of screws and a good deal of faith. Instead, period properties and those with any kind of character deserve suitable, good quality traditional reproduction furniture.
What was quite clear is that any property with charm, style, elegance and character needs traditional reproduction furniture which is able to compliment and support that character. Flatpack furniture shoved into a period property is a little like serving Christmas Dinner on paper plates with plastic cutlery. I could see in my head exactly the sort of period style furniture which would look fantastic. However, at that stage I didn’t have a single item of suitable furniture.
My first thought was to visit the local auction houses, and I certainly found a few odd items such as a beautiful gilt mirror for above the fireplace, and a wine table. But what I was really after was more choice, and the chance to assemble a full suite of items for each room which I knew would create a consistent theme, rather than a hotchpotch of near misses.
Because of this, I set out to search the web – that endless source of retail therapy. My initial enthusiasm was somewhat dampened, however, by the disappointing selection available from so many retailers. The problem I believe is that too many websites selling traditional reproduction furniture are simply traders, shifting stock from warehouses with no actual involvement with the style, designs or creation of the items on sale.
However, I didn’t give up – and what a good thing too. I came across Newby House Interiors, a family run business that’s been going for over 100 years. Their website is just the latest way in which they promote and sell their huge range of traditional reproduction furniture, with a fabulous range of styles, and items of furniture ranging from occasional tables and lamp tables to dining tables, chests of drawers, dressers, sideboards and bookcases. They also provide a wide range of suitable lighting fixtures to help ensure the overall look of a room is suitably themed, and simply beautiful. If you’re looking for stylish, well made furniture for your home, you’d find them hard to beat for service, range or quality.
